At the latest count, there were 6,998,608,412 people on the planet. The United Nations estimates that around 850 million of them will go hungry each day. This presents a serious challenge for both humanitarians and entrepreneurs alike. In a previous post, I wrote of “pink slime”, the delightful additive that many fast food entrepreneurs were using to stretch a pound of hamburger meat. The Japanese, not to be out-innovated by those clever Americans, have been quietly raising the ante. Their latest breakthrough begins with the recognition that human waste contains a considerable amount of protein. Researcher Ikeda-san does acknowledge that there may be some reticence surrounding the eating of human excrement. Ya think?
