It was a head-hunter who first introduced me to my current employer. My wife and I flew into town the night before the interviews and met her with her husband for dinner. As we walked into the restaurant, the two of them immediately recognized us. During the course of the evening, he revealed his profession; he was an expert at mining data on the internet. (Hint: he does not use Google). He and his wife knew stuff about me that even I had forgotten. That night, I learned that employers use the internet to rank prospects for agreeableness, extroversion, openness to new experience, conscientiousness and neuroticism. When my kids and their college-age friends tell me their Facebook pages are private, this is why I roll my eyes. For those who are outraged by the news that employers are now asking applicants for their Facebook password, I suggest you save your energy for a more worthwhile cause. Like it or not, there is a digital image of you stored forever in the cloud.
