Modern air travel is founded on a number of assumptions regarding safety. It is assumed that dividing 15 ounces of a dangerous liquid into five 3 ounce bottles makes it safe. It is assumed that pilots are physically healthy, mentally stable individuals (see “Jet Blue Pilot Goes Berserk, Subdued by Passengers”, USA Today, 3/28/12) It is further assumed that modern aircraft are designed with generous safety margins, and that the wings will not fall off in flight (“Airbus Expects Years of Grappling with A380 Cracks”, Reuters, 3/18/2012) Perhaps most important of all, it is assumed that the combination of modern technology and pilot skill can overcome any obstacle Mother Nature might conjure up. If you are planning a flight in the near future, you are advised to save the video until after you land.
